If, when you are looking at the Windows Update Pane, immediately after having triggered a manual update check, you do not see a Download and install link related to a cumulative update, then Microsoft has not deemed your system ready for or in need of it.

The presence of a Download and install link in the Windows Update Pane is the one and only way to get an optional cumulative update to install through Windows Update itself.  If it doesn't show up, then don't worry about it.

I just did a manual check on my machine, which had been noted as up to date as of the check of last night, and the Download and install link is now there with the section, Optional Updates Available, which has the specific information regarding the optional update's KB number immediately prior to the link.  There have been times when I have checked shortly after an optional cumulative update was released and still been told I was up to date, as my computer was not "deemed in need of it" by Windows Update using whatever algorithm it is that Microsoft uses to make that determination.

This has been the situation for as long as I can remember once optional cumulative updates came on the scene.

I should also add that from may onwards due to the virus, there will not be any more optionals for the forseeable future.

And only security ones.

Its probably best this happens, I have had optionals that have dammaged my system badly.

No one has mentioned feature updates though.

I think feature updates should stop completely till the virus goes away to, but I guess these will continue to.
