Feedback Hub Link: Lack of Keyboard Shortcuts for Read Aloud Controls #w10pc

Hello All,

I have just created feedback on the Feedback Hub regarding this issue.   The direct link to the feedback, on which anyone can upvote, add additional comments, or just read it, is:  https://aka.ms/AA7wzrm

It's entitled:  Read Aloud in new Edge lacks accessibility via keyboard shortcuts

By the way, if anyone can explain the difference between Read Aloud and Immersive Reader I'd appreciate it.   I see Immersive Reader mentioned, but in the Dev version of new Edge there is nothing that seems to appear under the name Immersive Reader that I've found.

Blah, I can't really upvote anything, as I'm on the mac and don't really do much in windows except discord, and siming. I'll copy this over, but it's a shame we can't really work with anything outside the feedback hub app. I'll take a. look and write my novel if any is due in the feedback app later.

Sarah,

It makes perfect sense that Windows 10 Feedback occur under Windows 10, using the built-in mechanism to provide it.   If OSX has a parallel mechanism I wouldn't dream that it would be able to be accessed under Windows 10.   There are things that are sui generis for very good reason.

If you can get on Windows 10, whether real or virtual on the Mac, then do, please, add whatever you feel appropriate to that feedback on the Feedback Hub.

No worries. I have the link saved on a network drive. I'm scheduled to do a flight tomorrow, I hope, if my body does not say no. So while I'm in the air for 3 hours I can def take the time to read over the feedback and submit and or upvote.

Blessings and have a happy Thursday.

Hi Brian,

Whenever I open the link to access to your feedback, a message pops up telling me that I can't see this feedback. I sent a feedback myself, but I can't even read my own feedback. I signed in, but I can't figure out why it is stopping me from accessing the this specific feedback's. I can search for others, but I couldn't  find yours.

Best,

Forgot to mention that I see Sarah has added a comment to the feedback, so she must have gotten it to open correctly in Feedback Hub.

Mr. Ed

Hi Brian,

Well when I go to a page that I want to have read on the New Edge version  80.0.361.69 (Official build) (64-bit)

Also using Jaws 2020. I then can press alt + D then tab one time and I hear jaws say Enter immersive reader Button. What Jaws calls this button I copied from the Jaws speech history. So that is where I got it from instead of calling it Read aloud.

Mr. Ed

Hi Brian,

Immersive Reader is a group of features designed for people with dyslexia in Microsoft apps. It appears in the new Edge browser, and in Word - although there it's called Learning Tools. One of the features include in Immersive Reader is Read Aloud.

Thanks,

Steve 🐾

Steve,

Thanks very much.   It sounds like you might "be on the inside" as a Microsoft employee.  If so, I beg you to pass this feedback up:  Please STOP referring to the same thing by 20 different names.  It helps no one, least of all the users or potential users.

Pick a name for a function that does the same thing across programs and/or platforms and stick with it, at least at the level of the user.  It's absolutely exhausting to hear that Immersive Reader is an umbrella term (which would be OK in itself) but then the actual end-user function is called Read Aloud in Edge and Learning Tools in Word.  That's both maddening and confusing.

If you're not on the inside, you still have my thanks, and can take the above for whatever it is, or is not, worth to you.

By the way, the direct Feedback Hub link for my feedback regarding Read Aloud is:    https://aka.ms/AA7wzrm

Thanks to Sarah who added a comment.

I ask anyone that cares about lack of keyboard shortcuts for Read Aloud to activate that link and at the very least upvote the feedback.   Microsoft does pay attention to feedback that comes through the hub and the number of upvotes and comments to same.  That's one of the ways priorities are set.

I was actually surprised to see that two of my prior pieces of feedback got not only official responses but were noted as having been fixed in a specific cumulative update.

I don't know how to access to your feedback, every time I try it a window pops up with this message:

Your account doesn't have access to this feedback.

How do I get around this inconvenience?

Leo,

I have no idea.   All feedback submitted by regular users such as myself should, in theory, be accessible to anyone who has the link to open it in Feedback Hub.

This is a Microsoft issue, and I'd contact them on the Disability Help Desk, (800) 936-5900, to ask about what's happening here.  Others have already been able to access it and add comments.
