October 2020 cumulative update: KB4579311/build 19041(2).572 #KBAlert

Edited

Hi all,

A few things and reminders (we have new family members here):

  • This forum uses hashtags extensively to convey important messages and to help you with defining email client rules (speaking of email rules, an admin notice about it is going out soon).
  • You will notice that this message is tagged as “special”, signifying its importance.
  • In coming days you will get end of life reminders for 1809 (October 2018 Update) and 1903 (May 2019 Update). If you are using one or both feature updates, PLEASE UPDATE TO A RECENT UPDATE (May 2020 Update will do, or if you prefer to wait, install October 2020 Update (build 19042/20H2) when it is ready for your system).
  • You will notice the subject is of the form “19041(2).number”. This is to signify that, as far as updates are concerned, May and October 2020 updates share same system content. You will recall that I’ve done the same with May and November 2019 updates around this time last year.

With that out of the way:

October 2020 cumulative update (KB4579311) is getting ready for your computers, updating build revision to 19041.572 (19042.572 for October 2020 Update preview):

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4579311/windows-10-update-kb4579311

Changelog:

• Updates to improve security when using Microsoft Office products.

• Updates for verifying usernames and passwords.

• Updates to improve security when Windows performs basic operations.

Details:

• Addresses an issue with a possible elevation of privilege in win32k.

• Addresses an issue with the Group Policy service that might recursively delete critical files in alphabetic order from %systemroot%\systm32. This issue occurs when a policy has been configured to delete cached profiles. These file deletions might cause stop error “0x5A (CRITICAL_SERVICE_FAILED)” boot failures.

• Addresses an issue with creating null ports using the user interface.

• Security updates to Windows App Platform and Frameworks, Microsoft Graphics Component, Windows Media, Windows Fundamentals, Windows Authentication, Windows Virtualization, and Windows Kernel.

Known issue:

  • When installing a third-party driver, you might receive the error, “Windows can’t verify the publisher of this driver software”. You might also see the error, “No signature was present in the subject” when attempting to view the signature properties using Windows Explorer.

This issue occurs when an improperly formatted catalog file is identified during validation by Windows. Starting with this release, Windows will require the validity of DER encoded PKCS#7 content in catalog files. Catalogs files must be signed per section 11.6 of describing DER-encoding for SET OF members in X.690.

If this happens you should contact the driver vendor or device manufacturer (OEM) and ask them for an updated driver to correct the issue.

Cheers,

Joseph

Whenever I visit official  site of Microsoft for downloading the latest windows 10, it is saying may 10 update.

It is not showing me October update.

May I know the reason? And How do I get October update?
