• Addresses an issue with some apps, such as Microsoft Excel, that occurs when using the Microsoft Input Method Editor (IME) for Chinese and Japanese languages. You might receive an error, or the app might stop responding or close when you attempt to drag using the mouse.

Known issue:

  • Users of the Microsoft Input Method Editor (IME) for Japanese or Chinese languages might experience issues when attempting various tasks. You might have issues with input, receive unexpected results, or might not be able to enter text.

Hi Joseph,

I hope that the install process doesn't work the same way next week. This would confuse many users. But why  microsoft would release a preview extremely close to this month's regular update is interesting.

hello,

This update has a special install process. When you activate the download button, and the .net framework preview is also downloaded, the cumulative update will go through download, but will say up to date, and not install. Trying to re-initiate install you will get the same response  Rebooting and then choosing the download option will start the install process.

Hi all,

Note: the subject line might be a bit odd, considering that the KB alert is actually for build 19041. It was done that way to give new members a preview (and bring back some memory for old members) as to how KB alerts will be titled for upcoming Version 20H2 (Version 20H2 (build 19042) is really May 2020 Update with an enablement package; for those who may not know, you install Version 20H2 feature update (beta at the moment) as though you are installing a regular cumulative update).

August (and now September) 2020 cumulative update preview is now available (KB4571744/build 19041.488):

Hi,

That also surprised me. The cumulative update scheduled for Tuesday will be a security one, so it’ll download on its own or “download/install” button will be present on the front page.

Cheers,

Joseph

Hi,

Or more towards fixing Optimize Drives issue that plagued Version 2004 users for months.

Based on what we have seen so far, although timing was odd, it follows the test/preview/release cycle:

  • Test: in the third week of every month (or almost every month), Microsoft would release a candidate for a preview cumulative update to release preview Insiders. This is a bit complicated as this same candidate is also released to beta channel subscribers at the same time (more so for August update preview).
  • Preview: a week after preview cumulative update candidate is released, based on telemetry, Microsoft releases the corresponding preview cumulative update.
  • Release: the contents of the preview cumulative update, together with security patches, will go out on second Tuesday of the following month.

Usually the test phase occurs on the C (third) week. If preview updates are released for earlier feature updates, it is an indication that a test build is on its way. Normally this would have occurred no later than August 21, but was delayed somewhat – preview updates for older releases were released later, which indicates a fix that needed longer internal testing period. The delay in releasing preview updates for older releases also contributed to the preview update candidate for Version 2004 (and 20H2) being delayed by several days, which explains why the actual preview update was released two days ago. Given that the next Patch Tuesday is very close at hand, the so-called August 2020 cumulative update preview has essentially become an optional update, as the next update will include fixes from build 19041.488 anyway.

Cheers,

Joseph
