If you wanted to try second generation of Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL 2) i.e. Linux distros running on top of a virtualized Linux kernel but were afraid to upgrade to Version 2004, a good news for you: WSL 2 is coming to 1903 and 1909 as summarized in the following Windows Command Line blog:

This will show up after installing August 2020 preview cumulative update for these releases.
