Version 1909: notes on File Explorer search user interface #WinTen1909

Hi all,

The following does not apply to you if you are running Version 1903 (build 18362) or earlier:

A few things to note regarding File Explorer search experience in Version 1909 (November 2019 Update/build 18363):

  • Windows Search technology: Windows Search now powers the new search experience in File Explorer. Do not confuse this with Cortana – Cortana and Windows Search were divorced (gone separate ways for now) since Version 1903 (Cortana is making a comeback in 20H1 but in a different form). For Version 1909, when you open search in File Explorer, you’ll hear ‘Cortana” – this is a remnant of old days.
  • Experience: when you search for things via File Explorer, it’ll be similar to how you search for things in Start menu’s search box – NVDA and Narrator will play suggestion sounds if possible, and JAWS may act similarly (no top suggestion announcement though). Reviewing results is similar – you need to use down arrow to view results.
  • Search suggestion count: next to search field is a static text that announces how many suggestions are available. Narrator will announce this, NVDA will not announce it by default, and JAWS won’t announce this (for NVDA, you need to use Windows 10 App Essentials add-on to hear this announcement).
  • Previous search history: when you press Enter to activate any suggestion, search query will be added to search history. At the moment there is no user visible way to clear this – I expect a feedback to be posted regarding this flaw.
  • Search scope: not only local content will be searched, content from OneDrive will also be searched.

interesting If I type what ever it is I am looking fore, If I press down arrow It says the name of the file or folder followed by previous search query.  I followed sarah's suggestion.  It seems to work.  Will paste it below.
 
I hit enter, then tab over to the list view and read my stuff
