Important info for JAWS 18 users: JAWS Key+SPACE, D/audio ducking toggle message should not be trusted #jaws #WinTenOld

Hi everyone,

If you are using today’s JAWS 18 release (build 2738) and if using Creators Update, please read the following important information:

As part of today’s JAWS 18 update, VFO has disabled audio ducking feature in JAWS 18 due to issues reported by people running Windows 10 Creators Update. There is an important caveat, however:

  1. After installing JAWS 18.0.2738 and using Creators Update, press JAWS Key+SPACE.
  2. Press D for “audio ducking”.

Expected: JAWS should inform you that audio ducking is disabled if you are using Creators Update.

Actual: toggle messages are announced.

Advisory: don’t use this key combination until VFO comes up with a fix; this issue was reported to VFO today.

If you are using other screen readers or JAWS versions earlier than 18 (that is, 16 or 17), or are using Windows 10 releases prior to Creators Update, you can ignore this advisory.

Cheers,

Joseph

  1. After installing JAWS 18.0.2738 and using Creators Update, press JAWS Key+SPACE.
  2. Press D for “audio ducking”.

Then you also say:

Advisory: don’t use this key combination until VFO comes up with a fix; this issue was reported to VFO today.

Hi,
If you do press those commands, you'll hear things such as "duck other audio" and what not, which is exactly the thing VFO removed today.
Cheers,
Joseph

I presume I don't need to do anything to be sure ducking's not enabled? I never used that with NVDA, nor with JFW, nor have any intention to.

My system just popped up telling me to restart it manually. Upon doing so, it's taking quite some time to restart, so I'm thinking, here we go, baby! Would you assume that to be a fair assumption that it's probably installing the creator update?

Well, I can definitely confirm that since today's update Jaws is speaking normally, no more dropping in volume for a letter or two.
Hopefully they can figure out how to fix this because I do like the audio ducking feature especially sometimes when you go to a website and some video starts playing and suddenly you can't even hear Jaws any more so you could maybe look for a button to stop it. With audio ducking it's always easy to hear Jaws over other audio streams.
