Windows 10 Version 1903 is ready for seekers – people checking for updates via Settings app. As reported by folks in the last few hours, when you do check for updates from Settings app and you see “download and install” link, this means Version 1903 is ready for you. As noted many times, if you are going to install Version 1903 this way, please make sure that you’ve got things backed up, you’ve got up to date software (including screen reader releases), and you take precautions such as removing external storage media. However, if you are not comfortable with updating to Version 1903 this way, please wait until the feature update is offered to you on its own.

At least this time they're not just downloading and installing, but giving the user the option. I always hated the fact that a manual "check for updates" that occurred during the early weeks of a rollout was considered to have come from an implicit seeker, when very often that's the last thing the person who clicked that button would have expected or wanted.

Any idea how long "a while" is? After all, we're running a year old OS with absolutely no idea why there's such a long delay and what we should expect to happen. Will we skip 1809 and jump directly to 1903? Or will we get 1809 and have to wait another long time to get 1903? If we're going directly to 1903, shouldn't we be put at the top of the queue to get it, since we've waited so long? And finally, why is Microsoft being so silent on this?

This is not the first time this has occurred, either, but the scale of it is significantly larger because 1809 had its rollout slowed to a virtual crawl for many months, while other feature updates did not. Your wait time is utterly irrelevant. You can (though I advise against it) force a feature update on the day of your choosing once it's available to the general public. Microsoft is also still fully maintaining Version 1803. If you, any you, actually need one of the features introduced in a given Feature Update then, after the bleeding edge of the first few weeks, you should force the update. If you don't need any of them or, more likely, have no idea what is even coming with a given Feature Update, what in heaven's name is the rush? If you've got a fully functioning OS that's still under full support by its maker then you're like millions of other people. There have always been several versions of Windows 10 out there, on a very great number of machines, on any given day. Well, "need" is relative. I understand that the bug where network drive directories display incorrectly was fixed in 1809. I'd sure *like* to have that fix, but I'm not sure it warrants forcing an update. But I am finding it frustrating that I'm having to wait so long to get that fix.

Yup. My Dell Optiplex SFF 990 that is old and I had already purchased refurbished 2 years ago got the 1903 update on Friday, but my HP X360 Envy laptop that I bought brand new in April of 2016 is still on V 1803. I never even got he update for 1809. I mean no big rush or anything, but who knows. It often seems random.
