Re: to wifi or not to wifi
Dave Grossoehme
Good Morning: Another way to look at it is how many doors do you have to open and close as to those doors already being open. I always looked at the speed of a server service as to how many users are pulling from it at one time. The more of them, the slower you will receive the service or information you wish to receive. Another way to look at this is having an electric light hooked to a switch. Is it in parallel or searies, if in searies it can pull more electricity then in parallel. Dave

Re: Alt Tab on windows 7
Hi, If it works with JAWS 2020, I’d put slightly more weight on JAWS 2021 issue. As an alternative to JAWS Key+F10, you can tell your friend to press Windows+T. Cheers, Joseph

He is well aware of keeping the alt key down but it does not work. I have just told him of keystroke Insert F10 which shows running tasks but Alt tab does not work since he updated to jaws 21. It works fine on jaws 20.
Any other ideas to get alt tab to work as we are all used to?
Thanks

I have read about this issue on this list but cant remember as it does not affect my system. Alt Tab does not cycle between open programs, how is this over come please.
Also he mentions that his thunderbird mail keeps crashing, any ideas on this one?
Appreciate any help for him

Re: Keyboard
Sarah,
I’ve heard the blue switches are noisier but then every time I think I know which color switches to go with or to avoid, I get more and more confused. There are blue, red, orange, yellow, brown and then there are MX Cherry switches. How we average mortals are supposed to figure it all out is beyond me.
In fact, for a long time I heard orange switches were supposed to be the quietest but I don’t see too many KB’s with orange switches. The only series that comes to mind, the KB’s from Redragon in something called the Black Widow Stealth series or something similar. Nice but they are pricey.
The search goes on.

I just had an interesting bout with fixing up my wife’s Chicken Nugget after she attempted update to 4.71. when she thought she updated, I think it was her “mentions” (or could have been timeline) didn’t show up. After I sent searching for an actual copy of 4.71, I attempted to download it so that I could attempt a repair by installing over it, but her W7 machine said download was blocked as it “might harm the machine.” A dialog appeared asking if I still wanted to download anyway, clicked yes, but download didn’t occur. I don’t use CN so am totally unfamiliar with it, just don’t have the time to play with some of these apps. Any ideas what could be causing the issues?

Re: resetting a cable modem
Rick Mladek
Call your service provider. They will send a signal to the device and reset it. You will have no phone and/or if you have bundled services, you will have none for a couple minutes while this all resets.

resetting a cable modem
Larry Higgins
Sure hope someone is willing to advise me on this one.
This may not take as much courage as I might imagine, but I need to know the ins and outs of resetting my cable modem. When I say reset, I'm not talking about simply unplugging the modem and letting it sit a while, but taking the sharp object, such as a pin, or something of that dimention to reset the modem in order to return it to its default settings. Just to clarify, I have not changed any settings since getting this modem from Comcast nearly a year ago. I just need to reset so as to try to correct a problem that once again has crept up when recording live streams. After getting this present modem, the troubles that drove me crazy for around two and a half years was no longer a problem until last Friday evening, and I have had them ever since. I really don't want to have to deal with this vexing problem any longer than necessary. Now to my question. After the reset, what steps will i have to take to get back into operation? Will this modem, or gateway automatically restore my login and password, so as to let me back on the net, or will I have to manually reenter that login or completely change it. I really don't want to have to deal with Comcast Tech Support if I don't have too. I'm thinking that it might be easier just to call them up and order a new one, but just have to hope that they don't give me one with the same problem. What a mess. I sure wish I knew what makes these modems do this. This being when streaming, I lose the signal, and none of my settings to help with reconnecting help at all. I have practically pulled any hair I might hav left over this issue. If this question by chance strains the topical orientation of the list, or breaks the rules in any way, please contact me off list. Your help will be greatly appreciated, Larry

It does sound like there is some sort of update pending or has failed, there may be a retry button there on one of the updates.

Brian,
I recently tried updating from 1909 to build 20h2 but had the same problem that I did last summer when trying to update to 2004 – couldn’t access start menu or Action Center, and likely other issues I had not yet found. I’m kind of leery about trying again to update to 20h2 but won’t know if I have this same experience unless I do the update but wonder if there is anything after the update that could fix this problem once and for all? the update itself that I recently tried went smoothly, no problems detected, but something in that update has caused the above problem. Is there anything I can do with the update process to keep the start menu & Action Centers functioning?
Thanks,
BP

It can also depend on your ISP/whatever those people are who provide your Internet. Down here where I live in Missouri, we use Centurylink—not the best as it’s pretty spotty.

No clue. I always just use the portable installer though. Don’t know if that makes any difference. I had to reactivate since it was a separate portable installation etc. Otherwise, no problems.
