Re: Can someone please help with a nasty Windows Defender issue?

Hello again Brian
I am beginning to feel like I am
spamming you, apologies.
One further step. I read your article
of which I had been unaware, on using the ISO file directly by
running the setup program from the mounted ISO file.
When I got to the screen where I had to
choose what to keep, it showed:
Choose what to keep
Keep personal files and apps You will be able to manage your Windows settings. Keep personal files only Your settings and apps will be deleted, but your files will be kept. Nothing Everything will be deleted, including files, apps, and settings. Your files, apps, and settings can't be kept because your current version of Windows might be installed in an unsupported directory or you're trying to install an older version of Windows. It does not allow me to change that
radio button. The ISO file is one I downloaded yesterday. I feel
like I am running out of options here. Do you perhaps have any
further advice please?
Kind regards
Christo

Haha, I do not want to bother about this either, if my new Dell pc do not have problem. It is more than a week, and Dell technical still has not give me any productive responses, so I just wanna try installing a old version of win10 to test if the problem is version specific. Then I wannt try installing to a second drive to see of the problem is drive specific.

Re: About running a lower version of Win10 setup file inside a higher version of Win10

Hi, Let me answer my question in case someone else do face this issue.
Yes, you can install an older Win10 version inside a newer version of Win10 e.g. I run the downloaded iso of 19h2 on a 20h1 The process is very accessible, after the installing and setup process, my newer version of win10 is gone, and come with a old version of win10
No, using this method cannot install to a second drive. I go through this process, unlike running from a boot usb, this process do not have a custom option which you cannot choose the target drive to be another disk partition that is not the current OS. Brian Vogel 於 13/11/2020 22:40 寫道:

Hi again Brian
I tried to run the offline scan from
the Powershell, but got the following error output:
PS C:\WINDOWS\system32>

Start-MpWDOScan : Provider load failure At line:1 char:1 + Start-MpWDOScan + ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ + CategoryInfo : NotSpecified: (MSFT_MpWDOScan:ROOT\Microsoft\...\MSFT_MpWDOScan) [Start-MpWDOScan], CimException + FullyQualifiedErrorId : HRESULT 0x80041013,Start-MpWDOScan I will see if emsisoft emergency kit
turns up anything in the meantime.
Thank you again.

Hi Brian
As you know, I started by trying to
install mpam-fe which wouldn't run. After that I ran all the steps
to the end of your document on using SFC and DISM. I wasn't aware
of the offline scan option and am about to give that a bash now. I
have just read the article you suggested. I will initiate the scan
immediately after sending this email. Thank you for the
suggestion. I will let you know the outcome.
Kind regards

Hi Brian
Thank you for your responses and always
being ready to lend a helping hand.
I followed the steps in your document
on using SFC and DISM meticulously. SFC and DISM did not fix the
issue. I then took my heart in my hands and did your next
suggestion, the repair process, extracting and converting the
install file to a wim file and then running the command line
commands which all announced that they ended successfully. Finally
I rebooted.
Unfortunately, when I got back to my
computer this morning to check, The problem is still the same as
before.
Is there anything else short of a clean
install that you could suggest please?
Perhaps I should just ignore this and
install a 3rd party virus protection program.
I really appreciate your help and
guidance.
Kind regards
Christo

If you would, please give the assembled an update on what you've tried so far, and whether or not the problem has been resolved. Until then, I'm just going to sit on the sidelines. -- Brian - Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 2004, Build 19041

I assumed that the offline scan would offer an option to update
the defenitions. Such a function should be an integral part of
such a tool. If this is not possible, or is not an option,
emsisoft that ostin suggested or microsoft's bootable iso is a
good option.

But if it is, its a significant fact if the scan result doesn't
turn up anything. They use the same kb number for the update
always, and always have, but several updates come out each day,
one every few hours. The main thing showing the version of the
definitions is the second and third groupings of numbers from the
left.

I'm really not concerned if the last definition update has not applied, and particularly because I do not believe this is in any way related to malware. -- Brian - Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 2004, Build 19041

The first one is a long standing group and the
second replaced the now discontinued Jaws-Users group. So, it would be
best to join them both and see which benefits an individual most. As you
know different people will find and have different uses for the information they
might find with either.

Yes, This is happening to me. And it makes me wonder if my account is in jeopardy. I am now in the process of switching everything from that account to another email address. I have a period in my address, and there is someone with the same address but without the period. I get his email, so I wonder if he’s getting mine as well. Thanks, Rob

I guess it would have been helpful to mention how to invoke a Windows Security offline scan from the command line, since you're unable to actually get access to Windows Security in Windows itself.
See this article: How to Run a Microsoft Defender Offline Scan in Windows 10 If you prefer Powershell, search that article for Option One. If you prefer Command Prompt, search that article for Option Two. Those are the step-by-step starting points. And for those unfamiliar with the phrase, "open an elevated . . .," that means open with administrator privileges. -- Brian - Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 2004, Build 19041
