Mysterious "blocked shutdowns "

JM Casey

Hey folks.

I’m running Windows 10, 1809 18363.720. The other night I was experiencing problems connecting my old samsung phone to the desktop, which has been happening on and off lately – it seems to keep updating the drivers and then working again for a while, but screwing up again at a later time. Anyway, I ended up doing a windows update that night, and the phone thing now works. I don’t actually know if it’s related, though, but ever since then, when I go to shut down the system, I get the “blocked shutdown message”, even when no windows are open. It does not actaully say which programme is blocking the shutdown, though it seems like a name should be there – when there are no windows open it just looks like a blank list view to me. So, I’m guessing it is a background process somewhere. Anyone have any tips on how I can figure out what it is? I also installed dropbox software that night, but I disabled it from running in background and it’s now not in system tray, so I don’t think it’s that. I have macrium reflect cloning software running in background and it keeps popping up a dialogue every so often with a ‘close” button … but I can’t actually read the dialogue using JAWS 2018, so I don’t know what it says. This software was installed by the person who built my machine and last summer installed an SSD and put everything in a nice new roomy case, but as it’s pretty inaccessible I’m thinking of  just uninstalling it. It’s never caused any problems before though.

Any ideas?

Hi Sugar,

Try the following:

1. While in your Music folder make sure nothing is selected, now open the context menu with the applications key or shift + F10.

2. Press enter on the, View submenu, downarrow to, List, and press enter.

3. Again with nothing selected open the context menu, downarrow to, Sort By, press enter and you want these 2 items checked, Name & Ascending.

4. With nothing selected open the context menu, go to, Group by, press enter, and make sure, None, is checked.  If, None, doesn't show this means it's already selected, so press escapt to close.

Here's a  list of the shortcut keys for changing the type of view:
CTRL + SHIFT + 1 Extra Large icons,
CTRL + SHIFT + 2 Large Icons,
CTRL + SHIFT + 3 Medium Icons,
CTRL + SHIFT + 4 Small Icons,
CTRL + SHIFT + 5 List view,
CTRL + SHIFT + 6 Details view,
CTRL + SHIFT + 7 Tiles view,
CTRL + SHIFT + 8 Content view.

Hi Sugar,

To change the List view : ALT + V , L

To change how to Sort the items by : ALT + V + 0

To change how to Group by : ALT + V + G

You can use these three to view and also arrange how you want the files to be in particular folder.

Hope this helps

Steven,

I'd like to help, but I have the feeling we're using different AMD Radeon software.  What my system, with R7 Graphics, and my other systems with R5 Graphics both use is the AMD Radeon Settings utility.   I cannot get it to react to ALT+R in any way.

What is the exact program name you're dealing with?

Re: list view--what is content view?

Brian Vogel <britechguy@...>

The only way I can describe it is as an amalgam of medium icons view and detail view, but with the details not arranged as separate columns but within the row of a table presentation where there is one row per file, starting with its icon.  And the details presented are not all the same as in details view.  For example, for Word and PDF files one of the things shown for a file is the author attribute.

AMD Radeon Software

Hicks Steven (CORNWALL IT SERVICES) <steven.hicks@...>

Hi all,

There is a shortcut key for the AMD software which is alt+r.

This brings up the AMD screen and is really annoying.

Has anyone fouhd a way to disable this?

It seems that there is a way in the AMD software itself under settings but I am really not finding it very accessible and was wondering if anyone has tried or even found another way to do it?

Consider trying direct from AMD.   I have Radeon Graphics on most of the computers in the household and have been having AMDs own utility manage the graphics driver updates for some time now.

Microsoft surface pro Screen Lock

Hicks Steven (CORNWALL IT SERVICES) <steven.hicks@...>

Hi friends,

Something that is really annoying me, I have a Microsoft Surface Pro 3.

The screen is set to turn off quickly to save battery but when it turns off, I have to enter the logon password to unlock it again.

I Can’t seem to find the setting to stop this lock screen although I lnow it can be done as when the t.v. tuner software is running, it has an option to disable the screen saver which works fine and it doesn’t lock the screen when this is running.

When it comes to updates, there is and always has been a certain "damned if you do, damned if you don't" element.   In recent years my experience has been that the "if you don't" issues tend to be far, far more severe and harder to remedy if they occur than the "if you do" ones are.

As a dear, deceased friend of mine used to say, "Ya pays yer money and ya takes yer chances!"

All of the laptops in my possession at the moment that are being actively maintained are HP hardware.   I have an ancient Dell Inspiron 1720 but it's ready for recycling.
