Re: Start up sound

For the record I am the individual who was working with Rebecca. After disabling fast startup and checking the check box in the Sounds applet to play the startup sounds we still did not hear the familiar logon wav file. I didn't have time to engage in any additional troubleshooting such as to ensure that the correct .wav file was in the folder where Windows looks for these files, which I'm assuming is still c:\windows\media

The sounds for windows have always ben there you just need to turn them on. You do that in control panel, sounds, system sounds tab menu. The box to check to turn them on and off is in every version of windows.

Your pc manufacturer probably had it done for you.  But not all pcs come with this, well, privilege, and so i guess that's why the original writer was asking.  Cheers!

The startup sound is working on my windows10 computer and I didn’t have the need to hack into the registry, all I done is to switch it on from the system sounds option.

Thank you

Hi.  The windows startup sound won't work simply because it is disabled from within the Windows registry.

If having the startup sound is so important to you, I will outline the steps for you to get it working.  Be mindful though that this involves hecking your Windows registry, and I wont advise it unless you really know what you are doing. Hecking your Windows registry, if not done propperly will cause unexpected Windows behavior, and even worse, might cause your OS to crash, and only a complete re-install will bring it all back to normal.  Before you proceed, please back up your Windows registry.

You have been warned.  Steps are below after the lines of dashes:  Cheers!

1. Open Registry Editor.
2. Go to the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Authentication\LogonUI\BootAnimation.
3. Here, the 32-bit DWORD value DisableStartupSound can be used to enable or disable the startup.

I followed your steps, and the start-up sound box was already
checked. I shut completely down and restarted with no start-up
    sound resulting.

hit the windows key and type change system sounds, hit enter, tab
to check box for play start up sound and check it, then tab to OK
and enter. That should bring back your startup sound.

I’m using 2004 with JAWS 2020 the latest update. When I first got
my computer two months ago, I had a start-up sound. Then it went
away. David Goldfield used JAWS tandem to get into my machine with
my permission. First he unchecked fast start-up. That didn’t bring
the start-up sound back. Then he dealt with another check box for
system start-up sound or something to that effect. We were sure
this would play the start-up sound, but it didn’t. Does anyone
have anymore suggestions about how to fix this issue?
